đ« 5 Social Media Mistakes That Kill Engagement (And What To Do Instead)
If youâre still blaming the algorithm, this oneâs for you. Instagramâs algorithm isnât out to get you, itâs just bored. And right now, attention spans are shorter than a TikTok clip. Translation? âPosting to postâ is officially dead.
Here are the five mistakes I see killing engagement every day; and how to flip them into growth moves that actually work right now.
â Mistake #1: Posting Without a Hook
The scroll is brutal. If your first 3 seconds (or first line of text) doesnât stop someone, youâve already lost.
đ Whatâs not working: âHappy Monday đžâ captions, generic stock photos, or Reels that take 10 seconds to get to the point. Nobody cares.
đ What does work: Hooks that create curiosity or tension. (Example: âYour content isnât flopping because of the algorithm. Itâs flopping because of THIS.â)
⥠Current Reality: TikTok and Reels both reward watch time. If you donât grab attention immediately, your post wonât even leave your bubble.
â Mistake #2: Playing It Too Safe
Safe = invisible. The âprofessional but boringâ approach used to get you polite likes. Now it gets you silence.
đ Whatâs not working: Corporate-sounding captions, Canva templates that look like everyone elseâs, zero personality.
đ What does work: Opinions. Hot takes. Humor. A little edge. People engage with people, not brands.
⥠My rule: If I write a caption and it feels too safe, I scrap it. The posts that do best for me (and my clients) are the ones that make people feel something.
â Mistake #3: Ignoring the Platform Shift
Every platform is shifting right now:
-
Instagram is pushing Reels + carousels. Static posts are on life support unless youâre a meme page.
-
TikTok is rewarding longer (30â60s) storytelling, not just trends.
-
Threads is giving organic reach to people who are funny, bold, or brutally honest.
-
Facebook is⊠well, still Facebook, but Groups + Stories are the sleeper hits.
đ Whatâs not working: Copy/pasting the same content across every platform.
đ What does work: Respecting each platformâs current âlanguage.â Post the same idea, but in the format that fits.
⥠Example: I can take one idea â make it a controversial thread, a talking-head TikTok, and a carousel breakdown on IG. Same thought, three different languages.
â Mistake #4: Posting Inconsistently (or Just to Fill Space)
Consistency isnât about posting daily, itâs about posting with a clear rhythm people can rely on.
đ Whatâs not working: Posting three times one week, disappearing the next, or throwing up filler content that adds zero value.
đ What does work: A repeatable system. For me, batching content (shooting once a week/month for 30 days of posts) â then mixing it up (Reels, carousels, threads) keeps things consistent and creative.
⥠Current Reality: Platforms are rewarding consistency + retention. If you ghost, you fall out of favor fast.
â Mistake #5: Forgetting to Actually Talk to Your Audience
Engagement is a two-way street. If youâre not starting conversations, youâre just shouting into the void.
đ Whatâs not working: Long motivational rants with no CTA.
đ What does work: Simple, interactive questions. âAgree or disagree?â âWould you try this?â âWhatâs your #1 struggle with ___?â
⥠What Iâm doing that works: I treat captions like an open door. The more I ask, the more my audience talks back, and the algorithm loves that.
đĄ Final Word: Stop Blaming the Algorithm
The algorithm isnât your enemy. The algorithm is a mirror! If your content is boring, safe, or confusing, it wonât push it. If itâs bold, valuable, or fun, it will.
Stop playing it safe. Say the thing. Test the idea. Be the person people want to stop scrolling for.
